Since 1982, Kmag International TAEKWON-DO has been providing instruction in Taekwon-do and the martial arts in the Bronx, NY area.

What is Taekwon-do?

TaekwondoTaekwon-do is a modern Korean martial art and sport. Characterized by its fast, high and spinning kicks.But it is also a social tool. There are multiple interpretations of the name Taekwon-do. Taekwon-do is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot.'

Tae = 'Foot' or 'to kick' or 'to jump'
K'won = 'Fist' or 'to strike or block with hand'
Do = 'The way of' or 'art'

Put this together and Taekwon-do means: "The art of kicking and punching" or "The art of unarmed combat."

Tenets of Taekwon-do

Taekwon-do has five tenets :
  • courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Perseverance
  • Self Control
  • Indomitable Spirit

    It is the combination of these four disciplines that make the art of Taekwon-do.

    Student Oath:

      I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit.

      I shall respect my instructors and seniors.

      I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do.

      I shall be a champion for freedom and justice.

      I shall build a more peaceful world. :

        Objectives of Taekwon-do:

        1. To develop a way of life based on the tenets of Courtesy,Integrity,Perseverance,Self Control and Indomitable Spirit. An appreciation for Taekwon-do as a Martial art and then as a sport.
        2. To achieve physical fitness through positive participation
        3. To improve mental discipline and emotional balance
        4. To learn self-defense skills
        5. To develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others

        Taekwon-do is primarily a kicking art, often with a greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the art. Taekwon-do stylists tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. It is a hard/soft, external, fairly linear style and is known for being very powerful. There is a lot of competition work in many dojangs. Training tends to emphasize sparring, but forms, and basics are important as well.
